Buying Lion's Mane in Ireland after 60? Read the label first.

A plain-English checklist from an Irish supplement maker. No promises, just what to look for.

By Brian Cusack, founder of Dr. Mush Me · Updated

If you've been searching for Lion's Mane lately, you've probably been shown a dozen supplements that promise a lot. I make one of them, so let me be straight with you first.

In Ireland, a food supplement isn't allowed to claim it does anything for your health, and that includes ours. If a label or an ad promises that, it's a reason to walk away, not to buy.

And if something about your health is new or worrying you, please talk to your GP first.

What I can do is show you how to tell a well-made Lion's Mane product from a poor one. These are the six things I'd check if I were buying for my own mother.

1. Which part of the mushroom is in the bottle?

Lion's Mane is sold two ways:

  • Fruiting body: the mushroom itself, the white shaggy part you'd see growing on a tree.
  • Mycelium: the root-like network, often grown on grain such as rice or oats. Some products made this way contain a fair share of that grain.

2. Is it an extract, or ground-up mushroom?

Ground mushroom powder and a liquid or powdered extract are different products. An extract has been processed (for example with water and alcohol) to draw out what dissolves. Neither is a scam, but you should know which you're paying for.

3. What does the milligram number actually mean?

“20,000 mg” on one bottle and “500 mg” on another may not be measuring the same thing. One may mean the weight of dried mushroom used to make the bottle; another may mean the weight of finished extract. If the label doesn't say, the number on its own tells you very little.

4. Can you see the full lab report?

A responsible maker sends the product to an independent laboratory to test for things you don't want, like heavy metals and microbes, and lets you read the full report. Be wary of a “lab tested” badge with no report behind it, or claims that every batch “passed” when no report is shown.

5. Who is behind it, and can you reach them?

Look for a real company name and an address in Ireland or the EU, a returns policy, and a way to talk to a person. If something goes wrong, you want someone to answer.

6. What does it cost per day, not per bottle?

Bottles come in different sizes and doses. Divide the price by the number of days it lasts. That's the only fair comparison.
